About
INSPIRATION:
The Markey Race for Women’s Cancer was founded in September 2009 in honor of all of the patients in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at the Markey Cancer Center. After a diagnosis of a gynecologic cancer, patients are faced with many questions and decisions. From diagnosis to remission, surgery to chemotherapy, the Gynecologic Oncologist provides the guidance and expertise to help patients through these difficult times and is crucial to overall survival.
This one-patient, one-doctor, one-partnership is the true inspiration for this event and was sparked by a single patient in need of more than just surgical treatment or chemotherapy, she needed supplemental nutrition due to severe malnutrition, something that insurance usually does not cover and that she could not afford.
Thus, this event was established to raise money for patients like her in dire need. Each athlete’s entry fee goes directly to the Markey Cancer Center Gynecologic Patient Advocacy Fund. It will provide for our patients who cannot afford the most basic needs that are beyond treatment, yet critical for survival. For some patients, this may be gas money to travel to chemotherapy appointments, for others, it may be supplemental nutrition.
United, we can make a difference. If you cannot race, please consider an in-memory donation, or volunteering for the event.
PURPOSE:
To benefit the Markey Cancer Center Gynecologic Patient Advocacy Fund
To raise awareness of gynecologic malignancies, gynecologic cancer prevention, and promote the role of Gynecologic Oncologists in the treatment of these malignancies.

PARKING:
There are two parking lots for parking. One main grass lot (to the right side of Spindletop Hall upon entering the grounds), and one paved lot (to the left side of Spindletop Hall upon entering the grounds). To further ensure a safe race for all participants, participants, volunteers, and guests who are parked in the main grass lot WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO LEAVE UNTIL THE LAST CYCLIST is to the transition area. Parking in the lots is granted on a first come first serve basis and will close for the event at 6:45 am the morning of the race.
AFTER 6:30 am the morning of the race, IRONWORKS/NEWTOWN PIKE will be CLOSED to through traffic. After 6:30 am, you should plan to park off-site at the Berea Soccer Complex (and walk or cycle approximately 1 mile) or the UK Coldstream Campus IBM lot (shuttle to Historic Spindletop Hall). See Race Day Details!
RACING STRATEGY
The transition area will open to athletes for set-up, obtaining their timing chip, and bodymarking at 5:00 am. Participants are encouraged to come early! The triathlon will get underway first, followed by the duathlon, and then the 5K fun run/walk.
This is expected to be a fast and safe course.
All cars parked in the grass area next to the Historic Spindletop Hall will not be able to exit until the last cyclist if off the course (approximately 10:00am). We are working on having additional parking at the Kentucky Horse Park, with shuttles running to and from Historic Spindletop Hall.
CENTRAL KENTUCKY TRIATHLON RACE SERIES
New for the 2010 racing season! We are proud to announce this triathlon race series that includes three premier sprint triathlons in the Central Kentucky area! We established this series in order to continue to support the growth of the sport of triathlon in our region!
We are proud to be the first race in the new CENTRAL KENTUCKY TRIATHLON RACE SERIES. The series includes 3 sprint races: Markey Race for Women’s Cancer Triathlon, Lame Duck Try-Athlon, and the Susan Bradley-Cox Tri for Sight. (This series only applies to the triathlon, not the duathlon races).
Every participant that signs up for all three races and finishes each race will be automatically entered as a participant in the series (you must be registered by August 27th for the Susan Bradley-Cox Tri for Sight to be eligible for the race series due to t-shirt deadlines). As stated, entry to this series is FREE! The awards ceremony for this series will be held at the series finale, theTri for Sight. Every participant in the series will receive a free t-shirt, plus an entry into a drawing for FREE triathlon gear!!! Awards will be given out to the top five male and female overall finishers. Overall winners are determined by total time of all three races, and the participant with the lowest combined time will be named the winner!
NOTE: Registration for the Markey Race for Women’s Cancer Triathlon and checking “Yes” to be considered for the CENTRAL KENTUCKY TRIATHLON RACE SERIES does NOT guarantee you a spot in the Lame Duck Try-Athlon or the Tri for Sight. In addition to marking “Yes”, you must also register for these races individually and complete all three triathlon events. Don’t forget to register EARLY for the Lame Duck Try-Athlon and the Tri for Sight. These two races tend to sell out.
